Ask any man who hunts, or has shot guns for years; “Guns and Ammo” are for men. It is a man’s world! The hunter, the protector! Gun ranges and competition shooting were for men. They would probably tell you they never thought they would ever see a Pink, Turquoise, Blue, or Purple handgun, a pink rifle, pink camouflage gear, pink ammo boxes, pink ear and eye protections or a Pink Daisy BB rifle. However, most of them will tell you after a period of adjustment and the acknowledgement of how our world and times are changing they are pleased now. A few testimonies:
“The surge of women shooters, in my opinion, has been a good thing. I think that anytime a person, male or female, exercises there 2nd amendment rights in a responsible way you can’t go wrong. If more people are armed there will be less crime and if a person wishing to bring harm on a woman has a second thought because he or she does not know if that woman is armed, great. I would encourage more women to shoot and either conceal carry for those reasons and, I’m not going to lie, it’s good for business. Seriously though, I can’t see why any man would be against their wife or girlfriend being able to protect themselves or their families. It just makes good sense when a man leaves the house or even when he is home. I know I do not hear the best and if my wife hears something and arms herself before me I could care less as long as that intruder gets handled by one of us. This day and age unfortunately, everyone has to be a protector. This is not just a man’s job any longer.”

A WOMANS’ PERSPECTIVE……..
“The majority of my female friends now own their own firearms separate from their husbands. I sleep better at night knowing that I can protect my family from an intruder. I would not have second thoughts about dispatching an intruder or attacker if it meant me or my family or killing them. That’s just facts. Most of the armed women that I know or speak to feel the same way.

“My wife didn’t start shooting until 2010-2011. She was very afraid of them. Wasn’t comfortable being in a room if there was a firearm present. Now she has purchased her own handgun and enjoys shooting. I feel more at ease leaving her alone with our children during the day. She has a better way to defend herself and our family. She feels more comfortable being home alone as well. She realized that she wouldn’t be able to fight off a bigger stronger man but the firearm would equal things out.” Stated from, Francisco Cordov
Men are the protectors of their loved ones and families. They will do all they can to make sure their loved ones are secure and safe in their homes and when they are with them. Reality is, they know they cannot always be with them and women and children need to learn to defend themselves. For a man, knowing their lady can defend herself and their family is a big relief.
Now a days and especially during the holiday seasons, you will find men buying firearms for women, and women buying firearms for themselves. We are not talking just handguns but 12 and 20 gauge shotguns, along with high-powered rifles like AR-15’s. More women are asking for firearms and men are using social media groups, going to Firearm Stores, and asking friends for advice on what to buy their ladies.
Actually Smith & Wesson was the first manufacturer to introduce a line of revolvers for women called Lady Smith back in 1989. It didn’t take long for the other manufacturers to catch on to the trend. This helped start to gradually change the attitudes of the men.
Our advice here for the fellas is “let the ladies decide”! You may have years of experience but she HAS to be comfortable in handling this firearm or it can get her killed. That may sound harsh but it is the truth. Men have the best of intentions on purchasing and suggesting for their ladies. We say “be supportive”! Take her shopping and let the professionals work with her. It can be very intimidating to begin to handle a firearm with a partner that is very experienced. She needs to find her way and what works for her in her own space. You don’t want her making a decision based on what is best for you. This HAS to be what is best for her. Another suggestion is “help her get enrolled in Firearm Safety Classes”; at least 1 – 2 of the Beginners to Basic classes. Especially, if she is looking to eventually conceal carry her weapon. Classes are crucial to learning the skills, attitude, and knowledge needed to become empowered and confident in handling that firearm. This is what you want; A confident and empowered woman as the weapon to defend herself/family who has the skills to handle the tool in her hand.
If you are a lady that is fortunate enough to have a educated, supportive man that knows exactly how to provide that information and support for you already ‘WAY TO GO GIRL!’ We have been fortunate enough already to work with some awesome supportive men of their ladies. These have been Uncles, Dads, Husbands, Brothers, Boyfriends and they just want to make sure their gals know how to take care of themselves. We love teaching families together, married couples together. It is the ultimate of empowerment!!! So big kudos to you families and married couples that SHOOT TOGETHER!!
Colt actually had an advertisement in the 90’s showing a mother tucking her child into bed. The ad stated “Self-protection is more than your right…it’s your responsibility”. This ad lead to much controversy of course but in my opinion they were getting it right even back then.
So what happened? Where and when did this surge of female interest come on? In the last decade women’s shooting sports have seen much more of women participation by 51.5% for target shooting alone just from 2001 to 2011. That is just over 5 million women shooters, 41.8 % for hunting, according to the National Sporting Goods Association. Gun sales skyrocketed in 2011 and 73% of Gun Dealers said many of those customers were women.
Women’s shooting clubs have popped up all over the United States. There are now women’s gun clubs that meet at local firing ranges weekly to monthly, along with other social gatherings. They educate women on firearm safety to showcasing cute, comfortable holsters and concealed carry purses.
We saw a surge of women enjoying the socializing of the local gun clubs but needed more training. So, we decided to further our training and become NRA Certified and teach Basic Firearm Safety all the way to Concealed Carry Weapon Classes required by the states. We are women who support the 2nd Amendment, and women of faith that believe God wants us to be able to utilize our self-defense abilities. Armed Angels is based on the bible scripture Psalm 144:1, “Blessed be the Lord my strength, which teacheth my hands to war and my fingers to fight.” We pray we never have to use our skills but are very confident in ourselves if we do.
Unfortunately we live in a time where calling 911 takes an average of 10 minutes to respond according to the American Police Beat. Typically between 4 minutes to 10 minutes, depending on your area. The Department of Justice reports the best time has been 4 minutes while the worst has been 1 hour. In Feb 2013, Democratic Rep Joe Salazar argued for the disarmament of college students (HB13-1226). His statement was: “It’s why we have call boxes, it’s why we have safe zones, it’s why we have the whistles. Because you just don’t know who you’re gonna be shooting at. And you don’t know if you feel like you’re gonna be raped, or if you feel like someone’s been following you around or if you feel like you’re in trouble when you may actually not be, that you pop out that gun and you pop … pop a round at somebody.”
Rep Joe Salazar later apologized for his comment after a fiery of backlash. However, this goes to show just some of the mentality on women and self-defense. This is why Armed Angels choose to empower women, to help them gain confidence in their skills and ability. We believe WE are the WEAPON, the gun is only a tool. If you have the knowledge, you have the mindset. If you have the mindset, you have the attitude. If you have the attitude, you have the confidence. Many of the women we have worked with, much like me have been victims in the past or at least know a woman who was. They have chosen to never be a victim again. It is a helpless, powerless and vulnerable feeling and not one you ever want to relive. So choosing self-defense and self-protection over being completely powerless sounds far more appealing than peeing on yourself, cowering in a corner or using a rape whistle as some of our government officials have suggested women do.
So, up till just about five years ago there were very few Women Firearm Instructors, much less women carrying firearms. Now, the Firearm Industry markets firearms that will attract women. There are “Hello Kitty”, blue, pink, purple, so many different brands, styles, calibers, revolvers vs semi-automatics. Manufacturers truly have given women many options now to choose a more feminine firearm. Here are just a few of the styles available:
Manufacturers have increasingly geared advertising toward women, marketing special firearms models with smaller frames, custom colors (pink is a favorite), and accessories like the “concealed carry” “salmon kiss” leather handbag offered by Cobra Firearms or the leopard shooting gloves and Bullet Rosette jewelry sold by Sweet Shot (“Look cute while you shoot!” is the company’s motto). There are many more out there. All you need to do is Google “Women shooting gear”.
Since the federal government does not break down background checks by demographics it is almost impossible to have exact data on how many women gun owners there are. “Women and Guns” magazine, with Editor Peggy Tartaro said she estimates from 12 to 17 million. We do know the counties are constantly reporting more and more women are applying for Concealed Carry Weapon Permits each month. So empowered and armed women are definitely on the rise in this country and criminals might want to think twice before they attack. We like to say we are helping to create “Armed Angels Among Us”.
