Recently in an interview promoting “Avengers: Age of Ultron” Krishnan Guru-Murthy asked Robert Downey, Jr. if he was in fact not a liberal. This was Iron Man’s response:
When I watched this interview, it got me thinking. What exactly is a liberal?
Is a liberal someone who hates George W. Bush because he’s a Republican, not because he’s a member of the Skull and Bones?
Or is a liberal someone who supported John Kerry, a Democrat, because he was a member of the Skull and Bones?
Is a liberal someone who is pro choice when it comes to abortion but not pro choice when it comes to vaccines?
Is a liberal someone who wants equality for all except political enemies?
Is a liberal someone who grows their beard out to look like a guy from Duck Dynasty but thinks hunting is dangerous and should be banned?
Is a liberal someone who despises corporations but shops at corporate chains like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s?
Is a liberal someone who supports President Obama because he claims to be a liberal?
Is a liberal someone who is anti war unless initiated by a self proclaimed liberal President?
Is it someone who agrees with whatever agenda the trendy liberal media networks are pushing, even if that agenda isn’t in the least bit liberal?
Is it someone who supports changing the definition of marriage but doesn’t support changing the definition of other words in the future if liberals don’t agree with the changing of them?
Is it someone who supports paying carbon taxes to special interests that they despise because politicians say that that is the liberal thing to do?
Dictionary.com gives us a few definitions of liberal below:
“favoring or permitting freedom of action, especially with respect to matters of personal belief or expression”
After pondering this topic for awhile, I don’t believe I’ve come any closer to the truth. Like Iron Man, I couldn’t even really tell you what a liberal is.
