Your dog, Really is one of your best defense strategies . We, as humans, have lost our senses. I will grant you one of two scenarios…..We have either over evolved and lost the abilities dogs and other animals have, or we have de-evolved…..In other words, our survival senses are less than the animal. My guess is the latter. That guess even applies to me !!
Many nights I lay sleeping as my dogs constantly keep watch. Sure, they sleep…..But, with their acute hearing and loyalty to the property, they alert us to lots of infiltrations.
Most of the time it winds up being coyotes, trying to get in the chicken coop. Skunks are famous for this , too. At least the coyote kills and eats….The skunk kills for fun. It bites the head off and leaves the chicken.
My dogs have been active lately defending the chickens. They are rewarded for this. When we hear the commotion going on, we make sure to go outside and praise the dogs for their actions.
What dogs do we have? It really doesn’t matter. I have been the most severely bitten by a Chihuahua, protecting its owner. In the defensive strategy, size does not matter…Our dogs are of intermediate size. .Having a dog that has an attitude and obeys does !!
My dogs are friendly when I tell them to be. When not told, they can be VERY intimidating. Neighbors usually call before coming over so I can open my gate and be out there when they show up. Using repeated commands like “It’s okay”, or “That’s Enough”, to calm them .
Spending the first few weeks with a puppy 24/7 creates the bond that is unbreakable between owner and animal. We take our dogs to the store occasionally so that they know how to properly react with people. When at home, though, they become fierce protectors.
The dog, The number one line in alarm and defense of your retreat. A great companion , also.
