I want all of you readers to know how much I appreciate my wife. Many do not know that Mrs. G.I. JIM teaches Earth Science, Biology and Health to junior high and high school students. Often times her science labs and projects become information for my posts. She is a wealth of intelligent information. Thus, her lab on solar ovens got my attention.
Many of us have looked at purchasing these. The cost is expensive. We cannot afford to spend that money. What to do?
My wife has taught thirteen years in an inner city school. She is allotted $1.50 per student, per calender year in lab supplies. How do you educate on that? Makes you wonder where your educational tax dollars go. But, I digress from my topic.
Mrs. G.I. JIM had the students make solar ovens. These were made out of shoe boxes, lined with aluminum foil and covered with clear, cling type food wrap. The results were amazing !! The students not only cooked hot dogs with these, there were some that melted a disposable plastic cup !!
My point is building a wooden box, lined with aluminum, galvanized roofing or even aluminum foil, painting the outside black, and putting a piece of glass over the top, you have a viable solar oven that works !! I have even seen one built out of an old stereo cabinet, (pictured below) laid on it’s side with the glass door as the cover.
Think outside the box. When you cannot afford what you need, MAKE IT !! The components could even be carried in your bug out bag ( a roll of aluminum foil and a roll of plastic cling wrap) and you can commandeer an old cardboard box to cook your food.
Google solar ovens. There is a wealth of plans and ideas on these. Sun is free energy, just like rain is free water. Take advantage of both!!
