Making a solar still to obtain water is quite easy. All that is required is a canteen cup or other method of collecting water (even a tin can) a piece of sheet plastic, a piece of hose and a digging device.
Dig a hole between 12″-18″. Place your cup in it in the center with your hose running up and out of the hole. Lay your plastic over the hole and weight the sides down with rocks or dirt. Put a rock weighting the middle of the plastic down directly over the cup.
Water vapor will collect and condense on the underside of the plastic. It will run down to the weighted point and drip into your cup. After a few hours you can drink was has collected using the hose. The amount of water collected varies on the wetness of the soil and sunlight.
This is a great project to do as a family in the backyard on a weekend. Make a contest to see who can collect the most water. Always remember what I said about Practice, practice, practice in an earlier post. When camping try it there. When at the beach, try it there. In this way you will become accustomed to the amount different soils and environments produce and you can plan accordingly.
