Devin Nunes joins Jeff Denham, David Valadao, and even Jim Costa, all House Representatives for California’s Central Valley, in voting yes on the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015 that “if passed, the bill will render null any state-level GMO labeling laws like those passed in Hawaii, Oregon and Connecticut” reports Natural News.
The section of the bill nullifying current State laws requiring GMO labeling reads like this –
(b) Prohibitions against mandatory labeling of food developed using genetic engineering.—
(1) IN GENERAL.—Subject to paragraph (2), no State or political subdivision of a State may directly or indirectly establish under any authority or continue in effect as to any covered product (as defined in section 291 of the Agricultural Marketing Act of 1946, as added by section 201 of this Act) in interstate commerce, any requirement for the labeling of a covered product indicating the product as having been produced from, containing, or consisting of a genetically engineered plant, including any requirements for claims that a covered product is or contains an ingredient that was produced from, contains, or consists of a genetically engineered plant.
The Congress.gov summary of the bill also points out that any “non-GMO” labeling of food will be regulated as to not imply that GMO foods are less safe.
“The FDA must regulate the use of “natural” on food labels.”
Although it is within the Federal Governments power to regulate interstate commerce, the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015 is written to prevent the States from allowing its residents to be informed about the food they buy, benefiting large corporations that fund the politicians that propose legislation written essentially by the corporation’s lobbyists.
A solid free market response to this legislation would be to boycott companies that don’t label if their products are GMO. Use your purchasing power and vote with your dollar to put businesses with low quality products, out of business.
