Fishing can become a huge source of protein for the retreat. But, there will be no going to the bait store to get bait. It also leaves you vulnerable to being ambushed as your attention is on fishing, not on watching your “six”. (behind you).
First we will approach obtaining bait. Pre-collapse, building a worm box is a great start. Build a wooden box and fill it with compost. Go to the bait store and buy a box of night crawlers and red worms. Put them in the worm box. Keep the soil in the box moist and introduce new compost every so often. Your worm population will grow well.
If you are in a mountainous stream area, wade into the water and turn the rocks over. Have a jar to put your bait in. Hellgrammites are larvae of the Dobsonfly. Case worms are another larvae that enclose themselves in a small rock cocoon. These both make exceptional trout bait. I have caught fish using these when NO ONE else could get a bite.
Grasshoppers, crickets, beetles, even ear wigs are natural baits that can be used. Remember to lay in a good supply of hooks sinkers and fishing line. You can even preset up trout lines to use to feed your retreat.
If you are using conventional fishing poles you will have to have someone stand security while you fish. With your attention focused on the task at hand it would be very easy for a person to sneak up on you and get the drop on you. Thus, having someone watching your six is important.
Fish can be even eaten raw (sushi). It can be fried, boiled or dried. It can also be salted. I suggest printing the instructions from computer sites on drying or salting fish. ( remember my earlier post on “A Paper Trail” ? ).
Some of you in river/lake communities will probably fair better than others as you will have this source of protein readily at hand. In the foothills there are many private ponds. Getting permission to fish these now is important. Working out a barter with the owner as you catch 10 fish, he gets 4 of them will go a long way to keeping that permission after collapse.
Fishing. It may make your survival situation a lot better !! If you don’t like fish, you had better start learning to eat it. It is a lot better than eating rats which will wind up the diet of many city dwellers, post collapse.
