Bomb threats are trending around the country. Over the last several months there have been bomb threats in Texas, Mississippi, Ohio, Connecticut, Michigan and most notably California at the academy awards. Everyone is freaking out about bomb threats that never materialize in to actual bombs.
Last month, in January of 2015, over 50 hoax bomb threats [1] were made against airlines via twitter. “In the history of aviation sabotage, I don’t believe there’s ever been a threat called in where there’s actually been a bomb,” Douglas Laird, a former security director at Northwest Airlines, told USA Today.
At the University of Texas in Austin according to The Daily Texan [2], “A man being treated for psychiatric disorder called in two bomb threats in the West Campus area Tuesday morning.” The threats were made against the North Austin Muslim Community Center and the Shawarma Republique food trailer. The University Administration failed to alert students and staff for over 3 hours. No bomb was found by the Austin Police Department bomb squad.
After an investigation, a 14-year-old juvenile suspect was arrested yesterday in Tupelo, Mississippi accused of calling in a bomb threat to the Tupelo Middle School on February 9th. The Clarion-Ledger reports [3], ” Students and staff evacuated the buildings and stood outside for about an hour. Police and firefighters searched the school and determined it was safe to return to the buildings, and classes resumed about an hour later.” No bomb was found.
In Wickliffe, Ohio a bomb threat was called into the police radio dispatch on February 17th threatening to blow up the school. The police response was to send in the Lake County Bomb Squad, the Geauga County Sheriff’s Department, and the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority with K-9 operations, according to WKYC News [4]. Detectives from the Wickliffe Police Department arrested a 15-year-old boy charging him with inducing panic and telecommunications harassment. WKYC News [4] reported further that, “In an abundance of caution, a police car was sent to every school. Police say the caller indicated, “I’m going to blow up the school” before disconnecting the call. Since no specific school was mentioned in relation to the threat, police officers responded to the Wickliffe High, Middle, and elementary schools, as well as the two Catholic schools located in the community; Mater Dei Academy and All Saints School.” No bomb was found.
Wolfpit Elementary School in Connecticut was evacuated on February 18th after a school administrator found a threatening message written on a desk at the school. News 12 reports [5], ” Officials evacuated the school as a precaution and sent the children to a nearby building. An automated call was sent…” No bomb was found.
Security teams from the Michigan State Police responded to two bomb threats made against Pizza Hut and Burger King. Rockford Public Schools in Michigan also received recent bomb threats according to Fox 17 [6]. The school administration and Michigan Police have been carrying out bomb threat training. No bomb was found in any of these instances.
A suspicious bag forced the evacuation of a Fresno County government building on February 17th according to The Fresno Bee [7]. A worker at the government building saw a paper bag outside causing Fresno County sheriff’s deputies to evacuate some 200 government information technology and Fresno County Probation Department workers. Residents in the area were escorted from their homes by The Police Department, reports the Fresno Bee. The bag turned out to be full of clothes. No Bomb was found [8].
On Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles California on February 19th across the street from the Academy Awards show someone reported explosives in a parked car causing the streets to be shut down. The Los Angeles Police Department bomb squad and Fire Department responded to the bomb threat. A man was detained and “spontaneously” made statements indicating there may be a bomb in his car a Volkswagen Jetta, according to the LA Times [9], “The bomb squad used a robot to inspect the Jetta and blow up its trunk shattering its windows causing some smoke and a liquid to explode. No bomb was found.
All these bomb threats are smoke and mirrors right out of a Hollywood script. Bomb threats should be taken seriously but with the increasing militarization of police in America are these bomb threats that never materialize being used as another excuse to violate our rights and take away our liberties in the name of public safety? Who benefits more from bomb threats an insane “extremist” or the government who loves to grand stand all day about how it keeps us safe? Freedom is dangerous to those who wish to impose a Totalitarian Police State in the name of public safety for nonexistent threats. And at the end of the day the taxpayer foots the bill whether the threat is real, imagined or staged.
