The Shotgun’s Role

by Jim Long | PREPPINGANDSURVIVING.BLOGSPOT.COM | February 13, 2015

A shotgun is a formidable weapon in the hands of even a novice shooter.

A shotgun is excellent at taking small game.  Because you have to be a little closer due to shot spread, it improves one’s skill at stalking game.

Picking the right shotgun round is important.  I try to pick something that will take down large game as well as not destroy small, in addition to being adequate to use in self defense.  A number 4 pellet seems to fit that bill.

For home defense, I use 2 magnum rounds of double ought buck shot followed by two slugs.  only ONE time have I had to chamber a round in defense of my person. The sound of the pump being actuated put the fear of God into the individual and his adrenalin was pumping.  He set a land speed record going out of my driveway.

I believe that for all intensive purposes, the twelve gauge is the best choice for all including children.  Recoil can be learned and tamed with pads.  The reason I like twelve gauge better than others is the availability of rounds.  As it is more popular, so is the ammunition, and it is available more cheaply as it is more produced.  Saw the price on a box of 410 shotgun shells and my jaw dropped!!  Thus I believe teaching smaller stature family members to “go with the recoil” is a better choice than having to buy three different types of shotgun shells.

I like to put a tan or white paint in front of my front bead on my sight.  This makes the bead more visible in no or low light situations.

The shotgun….An essential part of every survivalist’s arsenal.
